| The only completely satisfactory method of applying a controlled and even quantity of flame retardant chemical to a fabric is by means of the coating & impregnation equipment that we have within the factory. However, over the years a number of customers have found themselves in a position of having either bought ready made curtains or had curtains manufactured which are constructed of non-flame retardant material. Such items are usually impossible to process though textile finishing machinery. As a consequence, the only possible action is to treat the fabric on-site. This is done with the agreement of the fire officers who have either inspected the premises or following the introduction of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order, have inspected the fire risk assessment. |

On-site treatment is likely to involve spray on chemicals

All the spray on chemicals that we are aware of are non-durable (that is to say are water soluble, are applied in a water solution and will be removed from the fabric should the finished goods be exposed to water, soaked or washed in water).

Such spray on non-durable finishes are only suitable for contract curtaining used within the United Kingdom. Curtaining treated with such non-durables may only be dry cleaned (the chemicals are not soluble in dry cleaning solvents).

On no account would the use of such non-durable finishes be acceptable on upholstered furniture or furnishings. Information regarding water durability requirements in UK domestic fire safety legislation can be found here. In recent years, fire officers have required water durability for treatments applied to contract upholstered furniture.

Only certain fibre compositions are suitable for the types of water soluble chemicals normally available in spray treatments. We have found that most natural fibres (and those man-made fibres derived from cellulose) are suitable for such treatments.

On-site treatment is more expensive than having the equivalent quantity of material treated by us in our factory. However, if on-site treatment is the only option, and the fire authorities agree that such an undertaking will meet the requirements of the risk assessment for the premises then we may be able to help. |
Options Available
- Treatment may be applied by a competent third party organisation who will take full responsibility for the work they do. Contact the sales office for details.
- Under certain circumstances we can supply a flame retardant spray treatment which customers can use to apply the finish themselves. Details of the terms whereby this option will be made available to customers can be supplied by contacting the sales office.
