BS5438:1976 Methods of test for flammability of vertically oriented textile fabrics and fabric assemblies subjected to a small igniting flame.
BS5867:Part 2:1980 Specification for fabrics for curtains and drapes. Part 2 Flammability requirements.
BS5438:1976: This document describes the test methods used for the contract curtain specification BS5867:Part 2:1980. Prior to testing, fabric is conditioned in an environment where temperature and humidity are carefully controlled. There are three test methods within BS5438, test 2 being the most usually required procedure for fabrics used for contract curtains. This test involves placing test samples in a vertical orientation on a specially designed test rig (shown below) and applying, for a stated time (15 seconds), a flame of specified intensity (vertical flame height 45 +/- 2mm with a flame reach in the horizontal position of 23 +/- 2mm) to the sample. The ignition source is applied to the fabrics face. For contract curtaining, three replicate warp and three replicate weft samples are examined during each test.
BS5867:Part 2:1980: This is the specification for fabrics used in curtains and drapes and contains the flammability requirements which fabrics must comply with when tested by one of the methods described in BS5438:1976. For contract curtains, Type B performance requirements are most usually specified by Fire Officers. To meet these requirements, fabrics are tested using Test 2 of BS5438.
Type B Performance Criteria: No part of a hole nor any part of the lowest boundary of any flame shall reach the upper edge or either vertical edge of any specimen and there shall be no separation of any flaming debris from any specimen.
